If the name of Somogybabod is mentioned in the county,
almost everybody thinks of a neat settlement in the northern part of Somogy
county, 40 kilometres from the seat of the county and 16 kilometres from
Balatonlelle, along the road connecting Kaposvár with Lake Balaton. The name of Somogybabod has become well-known throughout
the whole country in connection with the international Off Road festival
which is a great touristic attraction. The reputation of this event organized
by László Papp has been spreading all over Europe. Around Whitsun huge
crowds of people come to Babod. Since 1985 the most significant cross-country
vehicle festival of Europe has been organized here. The majority of guests
come from the Benelux countries and from German-speaking regions. All
the neighbouring countries have participants. In addition, Italian, Czech
and other competitors take part. Nearly a thousand vehicles compete with
one another in 11 categories of 7 race and special skills events in front
of twenty thousand spectators. Spectators are entertained by a number
of programmes for three day. The region of Somogybabod is an excellent place for trips and mushroom-gathering. Hunting is arranged by a hunting association which has only a few members within the framework of guest-hunting services. The Hunting Association of Tuskós manages the forests of the Látrány-Gamás territory and the agricultural areas nearby as their owner. It organizes big game huntings for individual guest hunters or smaller groups of hunters. The aim of the Hunting Association is to preserve traditional hunting methods and the hunting culture. There has been an exemplary wildlife management in untroubled areas for long decades, which is hallmarked by two world-famous sportsmen, recently deceased Béla Bay and the owner of Agrofema Ltd., Csaba Fenyvesy.
